United States Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant Balch, 21-year-old son of Robert M. Balch Jr. of Minneapolis, is a pilot with the All-Marine dive-bombing squadron known as Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. He attended the University of Minnesota.

Ellyson (age 21) drove his scooter 250 miles to Minneapolis from his home in Watertown, South Dakota. He said the trip took 11 hours, but could have been faster without the strong head wind.
