I think I’m genuinely surprised someone would buy my silly spark plug lamp. I think it’s cool and put effort in to it… but still.

Holy crap, Nilay Patel just ruthlessly corners Substack’s CEO Chris Best on moderating racist content and I love it

TikTok - Make Your Day

As your resident TikTok micro-celebrity + tech ethics/policy professor, I have a lot of feelings about the proposed TikTok ban. I think that this statement from Evan Greer of Fight for the Future articulates some points well. If the sole argument is "but China" I would very much like to see something beyond speculation. And if it's just not that, then go after Meta too. And either way maybe you could pass LITERALLY ANY DATA PRIVACY LAWS.
Nebraska state senator Machaela Cavanaugh is 3 weeks into filibustering an anti-trans bill. "If this Legislature collectively decides that legislating hate against children is our priority, then I am going to make it...painful for everyone." https://apnews.com/article/filibuster-transgender-gender-affirming-therapy-bill-nebraska-cavanaugh-b9018fd1bf72112ca984ff58679eda6d
Nebraska lawmaker 3 weeks into filibuster over trans bill

Nebraska state Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh is three weeks into a pledge to filibuster every bill that comes before the Legislature — even the ones she supports. The Omaha lawmaker is pontificating on the Senate floor about everything from her favorite Girl Scout cookies to the plot of the animated movie ā€œMadagascarā€ in protest against conservatives' advancement of a bill that would outlaw gender-affirming therapy for those 18 and younger. Cavanaugh declared she would ā€œburn the session to the groundā€ in an effort to stymie the bill. And so far, she has, slowing the Legislature's business to a crawl. Wednesday marks the halfway point of this year’s 90-day session, and not a single bill will have passed thanks to the filibuster.

People confuse etymology with entomology all of the time.

I have no words for how much that bugs me.

Until the US is safely walkable or bikeable, people will continue to buy urban tanks in self-defense.

Since my kids were three years old, they've known to raise their hand as high as they can and wave it around whenever they hear a car engine start.

Some strangers smile and wave back when they see my kids do this. They think it's cute! But it's not really that cute.

I guess congratulations are in order.

Twitter found a way to redirect attention away from another API shutdown.

36 hours of power outage was… enough. Really contemplating some sort of battery backup, generator system or something with as much as this has been happening here in Texas.

When the Louisiana State University football team loses in an upset, it causes judges in Louisiana to add 1,296 days of punishment to juvenile defendants (& 136 extra days of jail time!) as the judges are grumpy. Judges with degrees from LSU are harshest. https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/app.20160390
