@KimCrayton1 My grandmother left Germany in the mid 1920s, sponsored as a U.S. immigrant by her (closeted, of course) gay brother who had left after WWI ended. She left behind a small boy who grew up to be drafted in Hitler’s army, refused to serve, and was shot by firing squad at age 21. My uncle Kurt Stein.
What’s happening in the U.S. now terrifies me.

@KimCrayton1 @frumble As a white dude, this made me chuckle because I know what you mean. The sad fact is that, nowadays, most people whose profile pic looks like mine are toxic online to people whose profile pic looks like yours.
It’s not the world idealistic 16-year old me envisioned as I confronted my dad about racism and brought a black friend home partly to piss him off. (Happy ending: He lost the racism as he got older!)

I believe that #retrocomputing is about more than nostalgia (which is fine on its own, too!).
I believe that it's also about a reaction to the truly sorry state of modern computing. Old computers didn't spy on you, they didn't beg you for micropayments, they just did what they were told. They were tools for work, for learning, for entertainment, not tools for the capitalists to control us even more than they already do.
I also believe that retrocomputing has a future; we are, as a community, more than smart enough to design and build our own new retro-inspired designs, and build for ourselves a computing world worth living in.
