Honestly, I'm over companies "adopting" Juneteenth as a holiday because, as I predicted, it no longer centers the experiences of enslaved Africans and has been turned into "a day off" for many who would have no problem with enslaving their decedents
@KimCrayton1
I've been pondering this also. While I'm ambivalent towards having a day off of work, it definitely feels like "Not my holiday to celebrate", so I'm basically just thinking of it as an extra Saturday. But to those whose holiday it -is- to celebrate, I am happy.
@jferg @KimCrayton1 I love seeing folks talking about this, because I have been struggling with this too. I don't totally feel like this is my holiday to celebrate so it feels weird to have the day off. I am trying to do my own part in taking some of this day off and educating myself on systems of oppression and this history of how we got to here.
@KimCrayton1 It’s MLK-misuse all over again, huh? Quote a couple of lines from the dream speech and then act like the guys with the dogs and water hoses.
