I'm thinking of the novel Dust by Charles Pellegrino, pharoah ants and garden spiders control the mite population. Pellegrino's central conceit was that without those controls mite populations would outgrow their normal food sources and switch to humans and other mammals.
I don't think cordyceps would have to infect humans in order to royally fuck up our civilization. All they would need to do is establish themselves in an insect or animal that is essential to the bottom rungs of our ecosystem. Pharaoh ants, garden spiders, or honey bees. I think the knock on effects wouldn't be immediately noticeable, but we would probably be fucked.

I was all about #TheMandalorian season 3 trailer, until the Jedi showed up. A million Schrute Bucks to anyone that can tell me what a Prequel-era flashback has to do with a story about a grizzled bounty hunter raising his quirky and talented adopted son.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Trailer Confirms Andor’s Brilliance is an Anomaly

I was playing Dungeons & Dragons when The Mandalorian season 3 trailer dropped, and I didn’t get a chance to watch it until this morning. (I don’t know if I’ve ever written a dorkier sentence in my…

I'm trying to keep my expectations in check regarding #TheMandalorian season 3 because it really doesn't need to exist story wise.
Also, I don't think anything can match the exquisitely beautifully shot Ahsoka episode & finale of season 2 so if it comes close, I'll be impressed.
Twitter is just fully into its gaslighting era

"The Washington Post continued to run Twitter ads to boost views to its branded content campaigns on the platform late last month, despite one of its reporters being banned a few weeks prior"

I'm that reporter. It's now been more than a month since I was suspended on Twitter for sharing factual journalism. I miss a few people there, but the website has been easily replaced.

I've been speaking and writing lately about how tech companies try to shift the discussion on misinformation, polarization, harassment, etc., away from the systems and structures that are inherently toxic and toward questions of individual behavior.

This way they can blame their own users for any pathology and steer clear of calls for systemic change.

Today Elon Musk has come through with a perfect illustration for my future talks.

I keep having interesting debates with people here on Mastodon, disproving the idea that it's an "echo chamber." But a few days ago, someone insisted to me that social media was obviously a net negative on society, and when someone else asked him to back that up, the user indicated that it had created echo chambers, and pointed to a short list of studies. I pointed out that the actual research did not support his conclusions, and he told me I had not read far enough... (continued...)
