Update on my Immich trial run. I gave up.

Apple Photos is always going to be my primary media library. I don't need another media library on top of it, just a backup.

I decided to use `icloudpd` which I was running as Step 1 every week anyway. This just syncs a copy of your image library to a local folder or wherever. That's really all I wanted.

Tho this repo is looking for maintenance so... 😭

The new CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation worked at J.P. Morgan and Lehman Brothers. The Foundation has now fired a longtime lead developer and disbanded the team whose job was to listen to volunteers. Most of the people they fired were union organizers. Wikipedia’s editors are now threatening to strike. To stand in solidarity with them, sign the petition:

AI is killing the cheap smartphone. The memory that powers your phone now goes to data centres instead.

In 1985, the best computer a reasonably affluent American could buy was the IBM PC AT, which cost $19,400 in today’s money. Today, a Tecno Spark Go costs $30 in a Nairobi market stall and runs a processor billions of times faster. No other good in history has experienced a cost decline on that scale. […]

Now you can keep track of how many billions the AI companies are losing on AI. (Red is spending, green is revenue.) https://isaiprofitable.com/

why did they call them "ai datacenters" when they could have called them "slopping malls"

When I wrote HTML for People, I envisioned non-tech people learning it because knowing HTML is a generally useful skill in information work.

But AI kinda ruins that. Fewer non-tech people want to learn HTML.

But it seems to have found a niche audience among people who still want to learn HTML despite having access to AI. That makes me feel better about it.

I’m glad I wrote it when I did because I’m not sure I could have stayed motivated to write it in 2026 with the proliferation of AI options—whether for writing HTML or for learning it.

BILLIONAIRES NEED #AI FOR #ECOCIDE

because ecocide is #genocide at a mass scale.

#techbros are a malthusian death cult. instead of letting go of their billions to end poverty, they want to exterminate most of us because we are an “overpopulation” problem.

no, it doesn't make sense for these people to accelerate the #GlobalWarming environmental collapse scientists been warning for decades. it will affect them too.

they believe they will survive.

that’s why all death cults are suicidal.

If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature:

- HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air
- at least two child psychologists on staff
- age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse
- funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse
- arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids
- massive, safe playgrounds
- protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoods

Instead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers.

If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.
