Also, notice how the scammers took advantage of the widespread myth of public wi-fi being a popular attack vector. Of course, it's not. Yet I regularly see cybersecurity professionals spreading that hacklore when there is no evidence that it happens. People get hacked every second. Just not that way. But now they get scammed, in part, for believing that myth.
Teaching people to worry about non-existent attack vectors instead of the basics that actually thwart attacks is professional malpractice. It's the equivalent of prescribing leeches and bloodletting. As a profession, we need to do better.
