I’m going to try running my own personal Mastodon instance rather than relying on one of the big instances. Will this be a huge mistake? Quite possibly! But it’ll be fun to try and I can use a domain I’ve held onto and never used for much. You can find me at: @droct

Oil companies: “inflation has been really hard on us”

When Republicans are in power, they rack up giant deficits, mainly by cutting taxes on corporations and the wealthy.

Then when Democrats take the reins, Republicans blame them for being big spenders.

It’s always the same story.

You know when you're figuring out what to buy and you ask the person in the store what they think and they actually have lived experience with this thing and can give you a real opinion and you can use your human eyes and heart and brain to gauge your trust in them and their opinion? A.I. salespeople will just be offering you aggregated opinions of users from their databases. No actual lived experience. No human level gut check.

Genuinely have no idea how to turn the toxic cycle of discourse around.

Staying out of the way feels wrong.

Speaking up never seems to go well.

Trying to model less reactive behavior doesn’t seem to help anything.

Technology is turning all of us, myself included, into the most reactive versions of ourselves. We are not evolved to handle this much input.

I’m smart enough to know we need to step back from the brink, but not enough to know how to get there.

You know when a waiter quietly recommends you NOT order the fish today? A.I. waiters aren't gonna do that. They're ultimately programmed to serve the company, not us. They won't bend the rules the way an actual human might. It's gonna make things worse.
