San Francisco’s sustainable mode share is decreasing — we’re literally going in the wrong direction!

Between Fiscal Year 2016–17 and 2020–21, sustainable mode share decreased from 54% to 38%, below our goal of 60% by Fiscal Year 2020 😔

We need leadership to turn things around.

SF Just Had Its Worst Year for Road Deaths Since Plan to End Them Began

Last year was the deadliest for traffic fatalities since the city's plan to end them began.

And I say again, why can’t fleshy humans waiting at bus stops and biking in bike lanes be as protected as this parked car?
@burritojustice extremely dubious design but props to the workers for getting it halfway done so quickly 😬
Also 🤨 that parking control officers would be driving to the site of a blocked bike lane. @sfmta_muni Could we have officers on bike, riding around the city and being the heroes we all need? Seems like they could issue enough tickets to cover their salaries?

Why not both?

Some parking control officers can profitably ticket blocks of cars for meters and street sweeping. Others can help keep our bike lanes and sidewalks clear of parked vehicles, for our safety.

Kudos to @braitsch for this data work, and thanks to @hknightsf for telling the story.

Why most SF parking tickets don’t go to dangerous drivers

Data shows San Francisco officials prioritize revenue over safety in deciding when to slap drivers with fines for dangerous parking.

I would rather folks call SF “San Fran” or “Frisco” than call it “Liberal” or “Progressive.”

The image is a scapegoat for when the conservative policies and ideas fail.

This is great, but I don’t like how it’s framed as an either/or choice between revenue and safety. One PCO driving up and down Polk all day would make it safer and be a revenue bonanza for the city. Same with Valencia. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/heatherknight/article/parking-tickets-18106566.php

This @Streetsblog piece is perfect. One shock of living in SF has been how disconnected its popular left wing image is from reality. It’s the most conservative place I’ve ever lived. Hard-wired to stop change, and when it can’t be stopped, to drag it out as long as possible. Repelling students and young families is a great way to strangle your city to death.

Essay: Why Even The Most Progressive Cities Are Failing Their Car-Free Residents

As traffic violence has climbed over the past few years, a number of ostensibly progressive, climate-friendly cities have demonstrated that they are uninterested in taking even modest steps to supp…

@MLNow nails it:

“And that’s what makes this all so sickeningly dystopian: This was two marginalized Black men pitted against one another in a confrontation sparked by $14.64 worth of snacks from Walgreens. This lethal battle was waged in the name of protecting the assets of a corporation that, cynically, used San Francisco’s dystopian reputation as a pretense to carry out long-planned cost-cutting store closures.”

“Dystopia” doesn’t auto-fill when you run a Google search for “San Francisco,” but give it time. It’s only Wednesday.
