FUTO apps aren't open source but rather source available with heavy restrictions on usage:

https://github.com/futo-org/android-keyboard/blob/master/LICENSE.md

They're taking the place of real open source apps and making it less likely for viable options to emerge since people are going to use and contribute to these.

On its 10th anniversary, Signal’s president wants to remind you that the world’s most secure communications platform is a nonprofit. It’s free. It doesn’t track you or serve you ads. It pays its engineers very well. And it’s a go-to app for hundreds of millions of people.

Somebody sent me this blog my way today so I had a dig into it for a few hours. https://medium.com/@amitassaraf/the-story-of-extensiontotal-how-we-hacked-the-vscode-marketplace-5c6e66a0e9d7

Yes, Amit is right. Visual Studio Marketplace is a clusterfuck.

✅ extensions allow RCE, no sandboxing or limits at all
✅ full access to developer + build
✅ anybody can link any GitHub repo, even if it has nothing to do with the extension
✅ I’ve already found malware - backdoors, beacons etc etc

#mozila #firefox is helping censorship by removing bypassing extensions!
https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/the-censorship-circumvention-extension-has-disappeared-from-the-russian-version-of-mozilla-addons/130914/2

Not only does this browser have really bad ux, but also it helps governments, not users

The censorship circumvention extension has disappeared from the Russian version of Mozilla Addons

I am one of the developers of the Censor Tracker add-on, which is listed on Mozilla’s add-on repository. We recently noticed that our add-on is now unavailable in Russia, despite being developed specifically to circumvent censorship in Russia. We have not changed any visibility settings, nor have we received any emails regarding this action. Our Russian users now see this message when they visit the page of Censor Tracker: That page is not available in your region The page you tried to acce...
