I think that the only real solution to unregulated social media-based violence is to regulate it at the state, local, and federal level. These apps use resources we pay to maintain (i.e., telecommunications). The federal government protects patient confidentiality by regulating how it communicates across wires (i.e., HIPAA). We can do the same with discriminatory behaviors in relation to interstate commerce.

That said, I’m not advocating for Twitter. I’m addressing the idea of pressuring others to leave it, especially since there is no functional alternative now.

I think what people may be missing about the call to leave Twitter on-mass, is that all social media platforms, including this one, tends to be pretty toxic to Black people. One platform owner or another doesn’t make much difference, as we are constantly assaulted by white supremacy.

Every political figure who spreads anti-LGBTQ+ hateful rhetoric, whether it’s opposing marriage equality or directly calling for violence. It’s all dehumanizing. It’s all the same. They are complicit.
