I have a Ph.D. and a cat, as my username may or may not have made obvious.

Data scientist IRL. Also a mediocre [insert current hobby here].

The ACM has a list of common terms to avoid in writing in and about computing with a brief mention, a sentence of explaination and a list of alternatives.

Words matter: Alternatives for charged terminology in the computing profession

ACM’s efforts to combat exclusion in the computing profession, ACM's Diversity and Inclusion Council has launched "Words Matter," an effort to replace offensive or exclusionary terminology in the computing field. They have developed a list of computing terms to be avoided in professional writing and presentations and offer alternative language. The Council plans to expand this list in the future and invites the community to submit suggestions for consideration.

Techbro: Behold my brilliant new invention, the Child-Mangling Machine!

Us: This is worse than useless, it is actively dangerous

Thought Leaders & the Media: The Child-Mangling Machine will revolutionize every aspect of how we live our lives!

Us: Nobody wants this, please stop

Corporations: We're rolling out plans to put a Child-Mangling Machine in every supermarket

the code isn't shitty because people don't care about quality. the code is shitty because most of the authors are just trying to put food on the table and see a movie once in a while. investment is required to get more than best effort output in a work-or-die society. and yet, companies regularly sacrifice that growth for short term margins. it shouldn't be sustainable but money was too cheap for too long. as the interest rate winter rages on, more than fiscal debts will come due

you want enshittification? the bell phone monopoly gave us, free of encumbrance, the transistor, the solar panel, telstar, three different types of lasers, pressure treated lumber, and two operating systems, one of which i like.

and today at&t is bribing the friends of public officials to get out of providing landlines.

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.
disco did actually take over several years later and Disco Stu was 100% correct, so there
god remember when every c-suite guy either got fooled into or gaslit themselves into believing “the metaverse” was going to be a thing and we were all supposed to respect that and pretend that it wasn’t transparently nonsense
@Miriamm what about the person who named the meatball?
It is unfortunate that absolutely anyone that has had a picture taken with Jeffrey Epstein and/or Ghislaine Maxwell will be rashly tarred with the same brush. For example, it is quite possible that people might see this image and somehow associate the Catholic Church with pedophilia.
@problematicfacts to be fair, it’d be much harder to swallow a cat while it’s awake
