Douglas writes from the edge of the woods where the dead things feed and the living pretend not to notice, crafting stories that taste like ash and the last sip of wine before the lights go out.

Pegapuss

A cat black and odd, friendly, mine. As I weave my fingers through its pelt I notice oddities with the texture, curious departures in the direction of the fur. Inspecting it, where there should be straight lines, head to tail, the fur bifurcates, splits, it branches out into something resembling emu's features; single long causeways with dozens of little off-ramps, splitting off, crisscrossing, into a coiled mess of fur, feather and beast below.

Tryst

She was bent-over, naked, her ass slapping against my hips in a slow applause to our bodies. We tumbled in and out of a few positions, her face forever obscured but I knew who it was. We sped up, her moaning as I grunted, more a boar than man thrusting, seeking, hunting the orgasm. She tensed, body going rigid as the last thrust, last slap of the hips, last flick of the fingers brought her to, on and then over her climax.

My time

Daily writing prompt How often do you say “no” to things that would interfere with your goals? View all responses As a parent there's but one rule you have to follow: Do what's best for your child. That single, simple rule has profound consequences on how you live your life. It informs the food you buy, the hobbies you allow yourself, the car you drive, where you choose to call home.

#WritersCoffeeClub 3/24. Do you have a writerly "third place"?

Work from home kinda merged the first and second places. And the writing happens there too.

But, writers group for critiques, writers meetup for beers and the pub with a notebook and a handful of ideas counts as my third places.

crossed wires

A bit of oversharing but my sex-life isn't entirely vanilla. I don't require a great deal of hardware to get my kicks but I find pain heightens the pleasure. Scratching, biting, we keep to the tools at hand but it is an odd pairing; getting lost in the body of another but craving corporeal damage at the same time, a sublimation of the self maybe, or just a bit of salt with the sugar.

Farewell

Bound, strapped really. It's dark and illuminated in that way tree branches are around a camp fire, a bittersweet comfort against the terrors that wait out in the black. But, we're not outside. She, my grandmother, is coiled in black fibers that wrap and constrict. Her screams for my help are lost in my own struggles. We do not escape.

Daily writing prompt Are you superstitious? View all responses I've said it before, I'm a materialist; I could cut off a finger and have a replacement grafted on and I'm still me, same with a kidney or a heart, same with the brain, granted not all at once; Theseus' body, if you will. What I'm trying to say is we're reducible to organs, to cells, to atoms and no where in that reduction will one find a soul.

Over the hill

I've always been interested in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, given it a sidelong glance as I karate-chopped my way to black-belt back in high-school and had searched out gyms near me before settling with crossfit. It's been on the back-burner for years, decades, something I'd love to try but never found the time or the finances for it. I found them last week.

Daily writing prompt Do you believe in fate/destiny? View all responses I've struggled against this dichotomy, fate vs free-will, not liking the cage on either end. I'm a materialist, I don't think there was any magic breath blown into a crusty mound of soil that animated it in some other's likeness. We're a chemical process, proteins chaining at random for aeons till they arrived at some static form of replication, from chemistry to biology.
