How it started / how it’s going - Visiting Prague with the children, taking them to some old haunts and recreating some photos from 20 years ago.

One of my favourites cities in the world. The kids are enjoying it quite a lot too!

How editors can help authors write better papers: Beyond journals and articles

We present the experience of journal editors in improving the quality of published papers. As the editors of the Croatian Medical Journal, a journal from the so-called scientific periphery, we realized, very early after the start of the journal in 1991, that our authors needed significant assistance with their articles. We worked individually with journal authors and then moved this activity to the next stage – intensive workshops for authors. The work with the journals enabled us to extend these activities to graduate and postgraduate students – future authors.

On my way home after a fantastic few days in Amsterdam for editorial meetings with the RBMO team. It’s been a long time since my last full day (and a half) long board meeting, and I’d almost forgot how enjoyable they can be. So many little asides and details that don’t make it into o lone meetings (as much as I appreciate the efficiency of zooms)

I’ve acquired a nice long list of new tasks to add to my current projects, ready to make 2023 into an incredibly productive year.

How I like to spend my Saturday nights - delivering a webinar for the European Scientific Institute on #JournalSubmission #PeerReview and #AcademicPublishing.

Here’s me illustrating how most people fear the submission process - with the terrifying editor and army of reviewers waiting to destroy the paper, and a mention of the #Reviewer2MustBeStopped Facebook group where people can go to vent if those fears turn out to be reality.

I will be running the ALPSP course, "Advanced Journal Development: Strategic development for managers", with Vicky Johnson of Wiley, on Tuesday 29th & Wednesday 30th November.

This course includes strategies for journal development, acquisition and portfolio development, using case studies, to give attendees the opportunities to workshop strategies and discuss scenarios.
