When a car is repaired after a crash, the GDP goes up.

When a fruit or vegetable is grown only to be thrown out by a supermarket as food waste, the GDP goes up.

When you replace a phone that still works because of planned obsolescence, the GDP goes up.

When you throw out a perfectly good coat because it's no longer fashionable, and buy a new one in this season's style, the GDP goes up.

When a bridge has to be replaced because it wasn't built right, the GDP goes up.

When a piece of packaging is manufactured only to be thrown away straight away, the GDP goes up.

When a site needs to be decontaminated because chemicals weren't stored correctly, the GDP goes up.

In each case, society has no more usable wealth than it would have had if the car didn't crash, the vegetable wasn't grown, the phone wasn't replaced, the old coat was still being worn, there was less packaging, or the chemicals were stored correctly. Yet the GDP goes up.

Meanwhile, most of the wealth that is generated ends up in the top one percent's pockets.

The truth is that GDP isn't a useful measurement. It's just a convenient one.

So scarcity was added artificially: Even though the network scales indefinitely, there's a designed-in "choke point" of congestion which can impact performance.

That choke point is called the CVC -- the Connectivity Virtual Circuit.

That's what NBNco sells to their customers, the ISPs. And its pricing is levied by the megabit, and it's the most expensive terrestrial network link available for sale anywhere in the world.

Beautiful sunsets, as usual.

In Mildura, the Murray river is predicted to exceed 1956 levels in a few weeks. This levee needs to come up at least another meter to have any chance of holding it back.

In 2019, the Victorian Government announced the “immediate” end to old growth logging. They released a map showing 90,000 hectares they said could no longer be logged. But our investigation has shown the logging of those areas continued virtually unabated. #forests #climate #biodiversity https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-13/our-vanishing-old-growth-forests/101641964
The Victorian government announced the protection of this old-growth forest, satellite data shows within days it was being logged

It was described as 'the largest environmental protection policy' in Victoria's history, but shortly after the announcement parts of the state's old-growth forests were being logged.

TIME • RONE is excellent. I feel like I’m in Cave Johnson’s section of Portal 2. Or post apocalyptic Fallout - in which case I must fight the compulsion to collect these typewriters to scrap for equipment upgrades.

yeah....

So you can sort of understand why @aussocialadmin has been struggling to keep the hamsters fed....

Excellent sunset tonight in Melbourne.
