The first recorded instance in English of ”Brain rot,” the 2024 Oxford University Press Word of the Year, is in the concluding chapter of Thoreau's #Walden. It first enters Thoreau's drafts of Walden in the F draft (1853-1854), 6th of the 7 in HM 924, the manuscript of Walden at the Huntington Library. It appears in paragraph 7 of “Conclusion.” To see the full manuscript page, search for image 1252 at https://digitalthoreau.org/manuscript-search-tool/ Track all of Thoreau's revisions to the Walden manuscript at https://digitalthoreau.org/fluid-text-toc/ #manuscripts #dh #words #dictionary

The latest addition to Digital Thoreau is William Rossi's recent essay "Making 'Walden' and Its Sandbank" in a new, electronic version that puts pages from the #Walden MS side-by-side with fresh transcriptions. Retracing Thoreau's revisions to one of Walden's most famous and important passages—revisiting not just what #Thoreau wrote but when he wrote it—Rossi challenges a long-held assumption about the work's overall revision timeline and redraws the arc of Thoreau's intellectual development. https://digitalthoreau.org/a-new-take-on-thoreaus-deep-cut/
👋 fellow hcommoners! We're so happy to be here! By way of #introduction: Digital Thoreau is a collaborative initiative of SUNY Geneseo, the Thoreau Society, and the Walden Woods Project. We manage multiple projects designed to increase access to #Thoreau's works, help individuals and groups (especially teachers and students) engage with those works and each other, and provide insight into Thoreau's creative process.
