Most of the time I think I would be better off living without television but here is a thing I would buy a television for if I didn't have one. #Thoreau is one of a very few authors who made the foundation of who I am. When I read Walden in my teens it cracked the world open for me.

Everyone tell your kids that Henry David Thoreau invented the term "brain rot" in 1854.

There may be no lineal relationship to the modern use, but Thoreau's "Walden" apparently contains the earliest use of the term, with the same basic meaning as today. And they should know about him.
