A no-nonsense classical #chess app for iOS and iPadOS, eventually #playdate, originally on #newton. Based in Denmark.

Since 2015, Parakeet has drawn nearly 4000 glyphs for our clients.

Parakeet: Glyphs

This is Checkmate, painted in 1799 painting by German artist Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch. It is often thought to represent Man losing their souls to Satan, but Chess Master Paul Morphy noticed there is still a winning move. The Angel's very pointed look makes more sense; there is still a way out, a bit of hope.

I pushed a small update to the App Store, version 2.0.3, just in time for Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (#WWDC25). It should be out soon.

Most of it is under the hood (scene-based life-cycle, new state restoration and such), but you might notice a smoother launch sequence with the animating app icon.

After WWDC it’s back to working on 2.1 (maybe adding some exciting new stuff from the upcoming OS update.)

If you want to go nerdy on the details of each released version, check out https://deepgreen.app/changelog, going all the way back to v1.0 in 2008.

A small v2.0.2 update is out to fix a few bugs 🚀 Get it via https://deepgreen.app or on the App Store directly.

This will be the last version to support iOS 16, because v2.1 will build on features that were introduced in iOS 17.

How do you like the new dark/light app icons, btw?

If you’re curious about the #chess game above, copy the PGN below and use the Clipboard button when creating a new game in Deep Green. Why did Black resign?

Version 2.0.1 is now ready for download on the App Store! 🚀

Besides the nice iOS 18 icons shown in the previous post, there are a number of improvements and bug-fixes. Full change log can be found at https://deepgreen.app/changelog.

It’s still the plan to drastically improve the game rendering, closer to what version 1 was, but it’s complicated and still a little out. In the meantime, the contrast has been noticeably improved, particularly in Dark Mode.

I'm finishing up v2.0.1 to fix a number of bugs and update the app icon to support the new iOS 18 modes. And some other niceties. Happy holidays!
