Persistent PhD candidate - I study the political economy of neoliberalism and economic crises, mostly in Europe and USA. Happy to be here.

Your regular reminder that everything is political economy & we do redistribution all the time, but we only clutch pearls about fairness & wring our hands about cost and moral hazard when it involves things like student loan debt relief. Totally fine when we do bank bailouts, tariffs, farm subsidies, tax cuts, mortgage interest deduction, etc. etc. etc.

Curious, don't you think?

Lecturing on realism and the security dilemma today and - a bit surprised myself by this - but you better believe we’re gonna talk about the balloon.

Clear and excellent overview of the #debtceiling nonsense and why the #coin is the least-worst option from @rohan & Annie Lowrey.

The broader lesson here is that this all is an object lesson in how neither our media nor our political system is designed to deal w/ a far right authoritarian party.

We wouldn't be at this point if we had two pro-democracy parties & electoral/legislative institutions that weren't deeply anti-democratic & fundamentally broken. But we don't.

I’ve been thinking about what it means that mass adoption of generative AI is going to coincide with the first tech crash in two decades.

It isn’t good.

What comes after the tech crash?

[Dall-E2 prompt: oil painting of a cyberpunk dystopia] This semester, I’ll again be teaching my “History of the Digital Future” class. It’s kind of a guided tour through the WIRED archive. Working on syllabus modifications has left me thinking about how much has changed in the past year, and the risks we face in the years to come.

The Future, Now and Then
"Exponential growth is not real. It doesn't exist in nature, except in cancer, and it kills its host." Douglas Rushkoff talking to @parismarx on "Tech Won't Save Us". Hard recommend. https://pca.st/episode/fc3444c5-61f7-43db-adfa-b016be1aefb4
Trusting Tech Billionaires is a Recipe for Disaster w/ Douglas Rushkoff - Tech Won't Save Us

Silicon Valley has a solution for everything, but who do its ideas really serve? Every Thursday, Paris Marx is joined by a new guest to critically examine the tech industry, its thought leaders, and the worldview it spreads. They challenge the notion that tech alone can drive our world forward by showing that separating tech from politics has consequences for us all, especially the most vulnerable. But if tech won't save us, what will? This podcast isn't simply about tearing tech down; it also presents radical ideas for tech designed for human flourishing instead of surveillance, acquisitions, or to boost stock prices. A better world is possible, and so is better technology.

Periodic reminder that this sort of nonsense - constant changing of and litigation over the laws regulating suffrage - doesn’t happen in any actual functioning democracy, because all major parties agree on Adam Przeworski’s classic definition of democracy, and the pro-democracy parties are not constantly fighting a pitched battle to defend the basic right to suffrage and voting equality for all.

We have to talk about #Brexit.

It is a fallacy to assume #Bregret is a new thing. It has been a feature of the data for a long time. The data has just been misread by many political commentators, political scientists and media.

This is also a means of #introduction. I am a Professor of Economics at University of Warwick studying the #PoliticalEconomy of #Brexit, among others. My work particularly focuses on understanding the role that #Austerity played in bringing about #Brexit.
