I'm sorry to hear that Fay Weldon has died. Among many other things, she gave us one of the most astonishing and original television events. Looking back on it now, it must have been even more seismic than I remember. We had a few big hitters when I was young. Tinker-Tailor, Brideshead, Salems' Lot, Singing Detective, and Widows - but this was something totally new and challenging.

With the death of Alan Rankine we've closed the final curtain on one of the greatest, most innovative and influential chapters in popular music of the last 50 years. He leaves a very empty stage.
