I'm gratified to see that my friend Walt Mossberg, one of the best-ever journalists in the tech field, has left the deadbird site. https://www.mediaite.com/politics/legendary-tech-writer-deactivates-twitter-account-pens-brutal-takedown-of-elon-musks-leadership/

He has a Mastodon account, too: @waltmossberg

May more of Walt's and my former colleagues do the same!

Legendary Tech Writer Deactivates Twitter Account, Pens Brutal Takedown of Elon Musk’s Leadership

"Musk's latest move, to threaten to ban and sue the ADL - to the delight of antisemites and other haters - is the last straw for me."

My first post in Mastodon!
I'm Nosrat, I'm doing my PhD in computational neuroscience in university of Geneva.
I’m working on understanding underlying dynamics via direct measurement of neural spiking under the supervision of Timothée Proix.
A repost would be amazing as I’m finding my network here in Mastodon.

Climate change not only brings warmer temperatures causing storms and floods and droughts, along with gradual sea level rise — it also brings changes in ocean chemistry.

More than 90% of the excess heat trapped in the Earth system due to human-caused global warming has been absorbed by the oceans. Our seas currently store 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere, and 20 times more than all land plants and soil combined. It’s not certain, however, that this lopsided ratio can persist much longer.

As the ocean continues to warm like the rest of the planet, its waters are projected to become LESS efficient at taking in carbon dioxide, and may then release it back into the atmosphere more rapidly.

See — https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/the-ocean-helps-absorb-our-carbon-emissions-we-may-be-pushing-it-too-far

Also, the more CO2 the ocean soaks up, the more acidic its waters become. After decades of working overtime to take in most of the excess CO2 we’ve poured into the atmosphere, ocean acidification has already increased by 30% compared to pre-industrial levels, and it could increase an additional 120% (‼️) within this century. That, in turn, could lead to severe disruptions in the worldwide food chain, followed by famine and starvation such as we’ve never seen.

I wish I was exaggerating. But I’m not. We are in grave danger.

When it comes to sucking up carbon emissions, ‘the ocean has been forgiving.’ That might not last

The ocean helps relieve our atmosphere of a lot of the excess carbon dioxide we've pumped into it. Here's how its "twilight zone" makes that happen, and how the impacts of climate change make it harder for the ocean to do its job.
