Neuroscience thought of the day: Every spike has an energy cost, so a priori firing rate ought to tell us how important a message is, but not necessarily the content of the message. It's easy to decode simple (low-dimensional) environmental or behavioural variables just from knowing which neurons are currently important (in context). So is this why for decades neuroscientists have believed neurons communicate via firing rates rather than timing (which doesn't have such an obvious energy cost associated)? Could this be the "everything is everywhere" of the firing rate versus spike timing debate?
