Job Posting Title: Director of Learning Programs Job Description: Position Summary: The Director of Learning Programs (DLP) oversees the Harvey Mudd College (HMC) Writing Center and Academic Excellence Program and coordinates and contributes to the first year core writing course, called WRIT 1. The Academic Excellence (AE) Program provides opportunities for students to work together (and individually) to improve their understanding of concepts in the Core biology, chemistry, engineering, math, and physics courses. The Writing Center offers opportunities for students to work through the writing process and improve the expression of their ideas. Both programs are essential student support services that help the College reach its mission. Both are staffed by student facilitators and consultants who are trained by the DLP to teach problem solving and collaborative learning strategies. Duties and Responsibilities: Provide oversight of all program activities including professional and student staff, allocated facilities, and budget; make recommendations regarding resources to the Dean of the Faculty annually Hire, train, mentor, and supervise student Writing Center consultants and Academic Excellence tutors; provide professional development activity for the student staff as appropriate Establish and assess annual goals for the department in line with shared vision for student success and provide an annual report to the Dean of the Faculty Liaise with faculty, staff, and academic departments regarding the Academic Excellence Program, Writing Center activities, and other programming Supervise the Assistant Director of Learning Programs for English Language Learning; undertake annual performance reviews; Oversee the WRIT 1 teaching staff Provide annual staff training to new and returning instructors Partner with the Core Curriculum Director to hire adjunct staff as necessary Organize and facilitate regular staff meetings Contribute the equivalent of two courses to the WRIT 1 program, one each semester Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Education: MA in writing studies or a related field, or a combination of relevant education and experience; PhD or terminal degree preferred. Required Experience: Excellent verbal and written communication skills Three or more years of experience successfully managing and leading a team of staff and/or student employees, with the goal of nurturing professional development. Ability to manage the resources for the division including resource allocation, budget management, and annual reporting Ability to use Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canvas (a learning management system) and others, as dictated by the demands of the position Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion Ability to maintain professional standards of confidentiality as mandated by FERPA and College policies and to provide guidance for student and professional staff regarding these policies Preferred Experience: Ability to build a program and team around a set of goals, use resources wisely to meet those goals, and assess progress toward those goals Awareness of national trends and innovations in writing centers, quantitative skills centers, peer tutoring programs, and other similar student support services at higher education institutions Undergraduate classroom teaching experience Experience collaborating with faculty in a variety of disciplines Familiarity with the biology, chemistry, engineering, math, and/or physics involved in Academic Excellence tutoring is not expected, but is a welcomed bonus Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Salary: The anticipated starting salary range is $95,000 - $105,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
