My institution is having exactly one week of classes after Thanksgiving break, then right to finals.

That's just asking for half the class to show and honestly, I can't blame them. If I'm an overworked, always-stressed, underpaid student traveling all the way home for the holiday, and many/all of my finals can be done remotely, why would I come back for the last week of class unless I absolutely have to?

Do any of you teach at higher ed institutions where end-of-term student course evaluation surveys do not directly factor into reappointment, promotion, and tenure considerations? I'd love to hear from you if so. Particularly interested in this question because we have so much evidence that student surveys of teaching are very poorly correlated with student learning outcomes and can have a lot of bias in them. #highered #highereducation #higheredteaching Please boost! 🙏

Navigating the Transition: From Third Space to Independent Educational Consulting — Third Space Perspectives - Exploring Integrated Practice

Introduction In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education (HE), the demand for innovative and effective learning, teaching and assessment practices has perhaps never been greater. As a result, many HE educators active within institutionally-bounded “third spaces”, find themselves drawn to th

Education and Learning: a helpful distinction — Third Space Perspectives - Exploring Integrated Practice

While the choice to use ‘education/educational’ or ‘learning’ in terminology describing activities (‘learning design’) and people (‘educational technologist’) is often arbitrary, it shouldn’t be. We can use these terms to add valuable context that better informs our discussion of key areas of Higher

I'm not perfect with my grading turnaround timelines, so I don't expect perfection on due dates as long as students *communicate* with me and ask for time.

In the "real world" timelines shift, things get reprioritized, and stuff happens. I want students to get practice in asking for help, and I'd rather have quality work and clear communication than something rushed.

I do have to balance my own workload though. It's tricky.

Am I the only one who uses the inimitable @aliceroberts for illustrating English composition? Thanks to her excellent description and utilization of Dig Diaries, I was able to show my students differences between personal diaries, journals, and reading or research logs, and why what she’s calling a Dig Diary is how they should think of what goes into their reading/research log for their upcoming research essay. #professors #EnglishComposition #higheredteaching #nativeamericans
