Academia in a nutshell.

... "Data, in the hands of different people, can produce wildly different outcomes for society because how people use data shows their vision of the world. That's what makes our use of data to change the world at once exciting and alarming."

"Seek to do no harm, respond to the needs of those on the margins of society, expose unjust practices, and ultimately help educate us about our world so we can make better decisions."

Some quotes from the intro to Sarah Williams' amazing book, "Data Action: Using Data for Public Good." Thoughts?

"Data represents the ideologies of those who control its use. Data has often been used - and manipulated - to make policy decisions without much stakeholder input... Collaboration with policy experts, government, designers and the public is essential - it creates trust and co-ownership by allowing the work to be critiqued by those who know the issue best."

Climate delayer often claim “My country’s emissions are so negligible it won’t make a difference”.

But if every country that had ‘negligible emissions’ decided to do nothing, we wouldn’t be able to fix climate change.

Great piece by Hannah Ritchie: https://www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/small-emitters

Why “my country only emits 1% of emissions” is a lame excuse for rich countries to not tackle climate change

Five reasons why small countries can punch above their weight.

I'm a grown human with lots of tech experience & I can't stop saying thank you to chatGPT when it replies. It might be I'm trying to avoid a Roko's basilisk scenario ("you didn't say thank you so I'll torture a future digital you forever") or might be I'm just stuck in my programming.
1st draft of a github page 4 open analysis of ONS regional GVA data, prototype 4 opening up work I've been doing for SYMCA. Striking plot (see linked gif): comparing North/South Engl on y and x axis, proportion GVA change 98-07 shows radical N/S structural economic shift. Points to the left of the diag line = sectors with rel higher GVA in North. Sectors (rel) shrunk 98-07 more heavily concentrated there, sectors in South grew more. More to come. https://github.com/DanOlner/regionalGVAbyindustry https://github.com/DanOlner/regionalGVAbyindustry/blob/master/README_files/NS_98to07.gif

Great endorsement from @MichaelEMann: "In Computing the Climate, computer scientist Steve Easterbook takes us on a journey through the world of climate modeling, making the science accessible to lay readers, and showing us why we should trust the models and heed their warnings, before it’s too late."

By Seizing @Music, Elon Musk Shows He Doesn’t Know What Made Twitter Good

Since taking over Twitter, Musk has made mistake after mistake. His latest decision proves that he has never understood the average Twitter user—or doesn’t care to build a platform for them.
