Not mentioned in the post, but I comment here.... It was clear that almost no one on the fediverse clicked to read any of my posts. I know a few did follow along, and I am grateful.

I saw this post from Mr Mastodon and it made me think..... Surely we should be encouraging users to support their local instance? These are mostly run by enthusiast, who might get almost no financial support. I have a friend who runs one for over 400 users and, despite his best efforts, the contribution he receives is around $7 a month.

Mastodon wouldn't be where it is today without the good will of thousands of local admin.

I'm not saying Mastodon HQ should not receive anything, as their work is essential. However they get tens of thousands each month plus many funding awards for tens of thousands too.

The funding issue is a challenge across the entire fediverse suite of apps.
