Trying to answer a question no sane person ever had to ask: How Hard Is It, To Open a File?

This one is about the great POSIX idea of a filesystem, and why you could not play your games and open chrome for a few days.

How Hard Is It To Open a File?

It’s a question I had to ask myself multiple times over the last few months. Depending on the context the answer can be: very simple, just call the standard library function extremely hard, don’t trust anything If you are an app developer, you’re lucky and it’s almost always the first answer. If you develop something with a security boundary which involves files in any way, the correct answer is very likely the second one.

Had a great time at the #kde #megasprint in Graz.

It's a sign of a good sprint when on the way back I'm glued to my laptop rejuvenated with even more energy to continue hacking on things.

"SteamOS 3.8.0 Preview: Second Clutch" is out

This preview version is for the Steam Deck preview channel, comes with Plasma 6.4 and runs on Wayland by default.

Today I had to do a Wayland related patch in WxWidgets affecting Plasma.

Before starting I had the impression that it was a super-crufty super-old super-dead project.

I will admit publicly I was super-wrong; the code in the areas I looked was pretty decent and the review process has been modern and very fast.

New safe advice for FOSS developers; always leave review comments like a YouTuber is about to do a Video on it.

Fun updated stats on Wayland vs X11 within Plasma.

- 100% of all git-master testers with metrics enabled ran Wayland.

- Even though our overall conversion rate for all users on Plasma 6.x is around 80%, if we filter in on just Plasma 6.5.x users, we're at around a 95% crossover.

I genuinely would not have known it was plasma if the author didn't say it. I'm genuinely impressed by what some people manage to do with it.

I'm going to fosdem tomorrow!
Now you're thinking with Desktop Portals.
