taking the conversation from a different angle: what tools/changes can the rest of us build to empower #blacktwitter and other PoC on fedi to create an environment where they can engage on terms they're comfortable with? Working off the assumption that white fragility will always be a thing, that nazis will be anywhere if they're not actively stopped.
I'm not saying that tech will fix racism, ofc. It won't. Tech alone isn't a solution to fundamentally social problems.
But I do think that the right tech in the right hands can be *empowering*, and I'm wondering what that could be (and it could be stuff like automatic instance-level blocklist sharing, for example)
Two things that are really important on here:
♿ Add text descriptions to your images/videos/audio. Accessibility is fundamental. More info: https://fedi.tips/mastodon-and-fediverse-accessibility-tips/#HowDoIMakePostsMoreAccessibleToBlindPeople
⚠️ Use Content Warnings on anything that people may not want to read right now. It could be upsetting like violence or politics, mild like movie spoilers, but either way it shows empathy and consideration for strangers. More info: https://fedi.tips/staying-safe-on-mastodon/#UsingContentWarnings
These features are key to keeping this place friendly. Please use them. 🙏 ❤️
years ago I wrote a tool called sloth — which is like cat but slower — and only today did I realize you can pipe things like vim through it
I don’t think I ever did an #introduction!
Hello y’all—I am Zach!
I’m a web developer. I work on the Eleventy site generator https://www.11ty.dev (full-time open source sponsored by Netlify 🙌🏻).
I used to write a ton of blog posts about web fonts and I’m get super excited about personal web sites!
My home online is https://www.zachleat.com
Here are my first Autism Infocards, Use them as you like within the Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
I'll make more cards soon, hope they are helpful 😊. There will be a download-link later on my website, when the set is complete!
(Reupload because of typo and wrong order of the captions).
Whelp, I've deactivated my Twitter account - so we're gone for good over there. No more doomscrolling, no more incentive to interpret messages in the worst light possible to win imaginary social points.
I'm going to miss some folks over there but I'm hoping to find a robust community over on the Fediverse - though rebuilding my network is going to be fun.
Also apparently I'd been on there since 2008 and had Tweeted > 14k times. Wild.
