My journey trying to get rid of Caps Lock

Frustrated by the useless Caps Lock key, I went down a deep rabbit hole to remap it to Escape and a custom modifier layer across all my devices. This post explores my journey from shorting pins to flash QMK firmware on mechanical keyboards, to configuring keyd on Linux and Kanata on Windows.

"Google has criticized the European Union’s intentions to achieve digital sovereignty through open-source software."

Umm...ok...I think I can see why they did that, but lets read further...

"The company [Google] warned that Brussels’ policies aimed at reducing dependence on American tech companies could harm competitiveness. "

Yeah. For Google itself it can definitely "harm [their] competetiveness".

"According to Google, the idea of replacing current tools with open-source programs would not contribute to economic growth."

Correct again, if you ARE Google. If everyone start using open-source alternatives it will most likely not contribute to Googles economic growth.

It quite likely will contribute to economic growth for a bunch of smaller/new companies. It will also open the playing field for software development which still being possible for anyone to verify/test/check/view the source code to ensure there are no flaws in there, or algorithms for tracking people based on advertising goals.

They are kind of correct too in that it will probably cause a
temporary set-back in economic growth for all those companies that live under the illusion of "there should always be growth and we will do anything to make that happen", but I consider that a good thing. When that speed bump has been passed there will be an opportunity to do a controlled/reasonable acceleration.

Given that Google has removed the "Don't be evil" from their Mission Statement, for unknown reason, I think it is wise, for many different reasons, to cut down on the dependence on Google (and Microsoft, Facebook etc), and to look at alternatives. Ideally open-source ones that can be scrutinized by anyone who wishes to do so.

I was surprised with the results, especially because that gamejam aims finding cool indie ideas to fund, and I don't particularly think that game is anything remotely commercial. And honestly, not even that fun to play. There are several issues with input, obstacle generation, music (it doesn't even play in some browsers), etc. But I'm confident that the experimentations were decisive. Technically and conceptually.

Back in 2019, presenting my game for the GameJam+, in Dublin. It got second place, out of 6 or 7 games. 🎉

It's an experimental endless runner game about a psychedelic/existential experience. I made it all on my own within the gamejam's 48h period.

So experimental, in fact, that the whole game is rendered in a single fragment shader, using SDFs. No geometry or textures involved, everything is procedural. All the state and input is dealt in Javascript, which sends uniforms to the shader.

Yep, bulletty runs on Android!

MS Windows Rant of the Week:

Now there's this weird floating Bing search bar that opens when you press Super+Shift+F. The thing is that I already use that shortcut for something else much more important. I found no way to disable that evil bar, so...

I remapped my shortcut to Super+Shift+G, then with Powertoys I remapped Super+Shift+F to fire Super+Shift+G!

bulletty v0.2.0 released with new exciting features! 🎉

Stumbled across this console feed reader Bulletty from @crocidb that stores all articles as Markdown in a local cache. With some minor tweaks those can be automatically converted to really nice PDFs using Pandoc.
