Such a delight to sit down with the great @a_greenberg for a long engaged convo on surveillance, AI, my wild path through tech, and how by rejecting the toxic norm Signal provides a shining model for better, healthier tech futures♥️
On its 10th anniversary, Signal’s president wants to remind you that the world’s most secure communications platform is a nonprofit. It’s free. It doesn’t track you or serve you ads. It pays its engineers very well. And it’s a go-to app for hundreds of millions of people.
I’ve found the BlueSky team to be very purposeful. It’s not run or owned by Jack, it’s not Jack’s thing, although he is on the board (it’s a Public Benefit Corporation in the US).
Jay Graber is the CEO & founder who fought for it to be independent of Twitter & calling it Jack’s thing erases her. It’s not great.
It’s another open protocol that makes different trade offs than ActivityPub.
I wrote more about the protocol and open source code earlier https://cosocial.ca/@boris/110149727703071833
I have a small number of BlueSky https://blueskyweb.xyz/ invite codes to hand out. It is an implementation of the #AtProtocol https://atproto.com/ for building decentralized social networking. Users own their #DID based accounts and can use their own domain name as a username, just by adding a DNS TXT record. Right now there is a first party iOS and web client, and a bunch of devs have been hacking https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto-ecosystem DM me here about what domain you’ll use as your name
Warnock, tonight:
"“To my mother, who is here tonight, she grew up in the 1950’s in Waycross Georgia picking somebody else’s cotton and somebody else’s tobacco, but tonight, she helped pick her youngest son to be a United States senator.”
Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?
Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists like Carnegie & Rockefeller.
But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.
Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on. #history #women #HistoryRemix
I am curious what you all think of this idea for a transpartisan political movement to renew American Democracy.
@aral I just read your article "Is the fediverse about to get Fryed?" and agree that single user instances would be a massive Fediverse improvement. What is it about Mastodon that incentivizes centralization? Does it cost a lot more to host 10,000 single user instances than it does to host a single instance with 10,000 accounts/users?
Anyone else please feel free to chime in.
