Empathy is a strategy

I have a weekend blog post ready. I finished that thing I've been writing, which now has a new title:

Why Intolerance and Extremism Happen (and how to protect democracy in a divided world)

I take on some big questions. (See the screenshot)

The conclusions are what I’ve been trying to say for several years, but I believe now I've explained it better and with more context.

The Trump administration’s new policy requiring applicants for student and exchange visas to set social media accounts to “public” for government review is a dangerous expansion of existing social media collection efforts. This policy gravely chills free expression. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/07/you-shouldnt-have-make-your-social-media-public-get-visa
You Shouldn’t Have to Make Your Social Media Public to Get a Visa

The Trump administration is continuing its dangerous push to surveil and suppress foreign students’ social media activity. The State Department recently announced an unprecedented new requirement that applicants for student and exchange visas must set all social media accounts to “public” for...

I've finally managed to reply to and thank all the wonderful people who, here and on my website, wrote such supportive comments about my essay on Sunday. At least I hope it was all of you! If I missed anyone I'm sorry.

You know, this is why I don't write many original posts. I always feel obligated to reply. But that's just my neurodivergence and trauma showing.

This is truly the worst timeline we're living through right now. But I'm glad to be traveling it with all of you.

Dog bless. 💖

There is one entrance to the #BernieSanders #AOC rally in #Denver, on Broadway. The queue to get inside the rally area completely encircles Civic Center Park. There are thousands of people queued up who probably won't get inside before the rally starts. Overflow spaces are also filling up; I'm camped at the Greek Theater at the south side of the park. It is exhilarating to see so many people here. So much shared grief and frustration at the destruction, and at the inaction and passive timidity of elected officials, and also joy in community and solidarity.
I am on my way to the #BernieSanders #AOC rally in Denver at the capitol. The bus I am on is standing room only and every bus stop along the way is packed with people headed to the rally. This is going to be a massive event. The mood is pretty energetic in here, with a lot of younger and many older people excited to be a part of a historic event.

Hello Mastodon peeps,

I have a new blog post ready called "Do the People Want a King?"

Usually I write a short intro but it seems to me a blog post called "Do the People Want a King" needs no further introduction.

It's part of the political philosophy series I'm working on.

These are the same people yelling that empathy is a sin, but now that it hurts them want everyone to help.
