MIT Study: average walking speed of pedestrians in 3 northeastern U.S. cities has increased 15 percent since 1980. The number of people lingering in public spaces declined by 14 percent in that time as well.

Occasional paper: The Suplex Bird โ€” Crooked Timber

French civil engineer Charles Joseph Minard was born #OTD in 1781. He was known for his contributions to information graphics, including his famous map of the losses suffered by Napoleon during the 1812 Russian campaign.

Writing about Minard's map, Edward Tufte said โ€œIt may well be the best statistical graphic ever drawn.โ€
