Migrants subject to removal from the U.S. under the contested Alien Enemies Act are getting only about 12 hours to decide if they want to contest their removal, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday. A Supreme Court decision allowed the Trump administration to continue deportations under the Alien Enemies Act but required the government to give detainees a “reasonable time” to argue to a judge that they should not be removed. Lee Gelernt, attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union representing migrants, said the period is far too short and its reveal is a “dramatic turn."
What’s happening to undocumented immigrants is not new to Black Americans: Latino migrants are the target now, but when #tRump suggested sending American citizens to El Salvador, alarm bells immediately went off for Black people.
