@tinker using something like mastodon.cloud is not an issue, but I would not run own instance or invest into improving it, because any such improvements are restricted by license. The best that community accepts are MIT or Apache licenses. But, if looking at Mastodon as a Twitter alternative, not as "Open source' alternative, it doesnt look that attractive.

Folks, Mastodon is AGPL - not touching this with a 20 ft pole. It needs to be MIT license or something similar. Back to Twitter.
