Immigrants, both legal and illegal, commit crimes at lower rates than native born citizens. People shrieking about deporting immigrants to protect “us” against violent crime may or may not be bigoted, but they are certainly ignorant. “Deporting all illegal immigrants” would increase the crime rate.

It doesn’t help to argue that the last admin eased venezuelan immigration or that the gop turned down a border deal. Both of these compound the mistaken belief that immigrants and crime are linked.

This decision in Disney v. Desantis seems to me to get quite a lot very wrong: https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000018d-6103-d4fe-addf-6b5f29c30000. It's just a mess.

Just finished this book yesterday. Really excellent! And timely.

It dovetails with our proxy failure (Goodhart's Law) paper too: sometimes aiming for a thing via proxies (quantities, scores, metrics) can lead to the opposite. Here the problem is aiming for control of life.

This review captures the gist of it: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/control-everything-on-hartmut-rosas-the-uncontrollability-of-the-world/

A federal appeals court judge wrote this.

I get why this is in the indictment, and it's fine rhetorically, but...: "He was also entitled to formally challenge the results of the election through lawful and appropriate means, such as by ... filing lawsuits challenging ballots and procedures."

No, there is no right to bring a frivolous legal action. It's illegal to do so. Again, not saying I'd have drafted this differently, but I'm concerned by the assumption that's "out there" that no election is final until courts say so.

Now would be a good time to discard the analysis and opinion of any member of the commentariat who has been on the “free speech crisis on campus” beat but somehow only ever focuses on the threat of leftwing “cancel culture” instead of the escalating assault from the Right.

Texas A&M suspended professor accused of criticizing Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in lecture

The professor, an expert on the opioids crisis, was placed on paid administrative leave and investigated, raising questions about the extent of political interference in higher education, particularly in health-related matters.

The text between Patrick and Sharp about firing Alonzo and the actions surrounding that text aren’t just mistakes or a failure to lead. They’re potentially illegal, contrary to basic American values, and an outrageous abuse of the public trust. These are resignation-level indiscretions if the reports of what occurred are accurate. There is nothing more fundamental to American democracy than the freedom to criticize public officials for their policies. And no greater betrayal than punishing it.
One reason I’m glad I’m not a justice is that I don’t have to report every single time I’m offered a spare seat on a private jet by a person I’ve barely spoken with.
I’m old enough to remember Not-Garland writing this: “Your address to Congress was magnificent. And you were so kind to recognize Mrs. Scalia, remember the justice, and mention me. My teenage daughters were cheering the TV! The team you have assembled to assist me in the Senate is remarkable and inspiring. I see daily their love of country and our Constitution, and know it is a tribute to you and your leadership for policy is always about personnel. Congratulations again on such a great start.”
Supreme Court clerk Mike Lee, trained under Samuel Alito and now a senator has weighed in with his expert opinion. The indictment is an “affront to our country’s glorious 246-year legacy of independence from tyranny.” Dude is a certified brain wizard.
