One of the best observations about LLMs that I've heard is: AI is a technology that is done to us, rather than for us. Really that's equally true of the surveillance panopticon and a lot of other stuff.

I have to wonder how many of the anti nuclear power campaigns from the 60s and 70s were backed by petrochemical interests to one degree or other. Yeah I see fission as a transitional technology, nothing more nothing less.

Not exactly pure hedonism. I think the virtue of Epicureanism is pretty well summed up by that line at the end of Voltaire's Candide about "we tended our garden."
I'm an unashamed hedonist, but choosing short-term pleasure has sometimes leed to future pain, and it hasn't always been the ethical choice. We humans are kinda bad at foreseeing the consequences of our actions.
