Further improvements of current protocols, e.g. by using a combination of Bifidobacterium probiotic and human milk feeding could lower NEC incidence even further, hopefully saving many preterm babies' lives.
However, the beneficial effects of Bifidobacterium strongly depends on the simultaneous feeding with HMOs, which are usually not (much) included in formula milk. So: mother's milk is the key!
We found that protocols including the probiotic #Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis lead to an earlier maturation of the gastrointestinal tract, better human milk oligosaccharides (#HMOs) digestion, and a lower presence of antibiotic resistance genes.
We performed a detailed longitudinal #microbiome analysis (16S and metagenomics), combined with #metabolomics, to assess the effect of the three major factors - antibiotics, #probiotics, feeding - on presence of virulence factors, antibiotic resistances, and microbiome function.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (#NEC) is a devastating disease, affecting up to 11% of all very-low birthweight (<1500g) infants.
