They are a nonbinary, disabled young person fighting their way through poverty to finish college, and they have been my student worker and dear friend for three years. This was among the commitments in our academic plan and something that I have been working on for several months now with my colleagues in the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation, consulting widely across the university. As I explained at Senate, too often we in higher education treat legislation (e.g., privacy, accessibility) as the ceiling when it comes to ethical considerations with technology, when we should instead view legislation as the floor (the bare minimum).

This framework, which will inform the procurement, development, and deployment of educational technologies, provides our university community with important guidance during a time of rapid technological change. It also represents the kind of leadership I believe that the post-secondary sector needs, which is also why we have elected to openly license the document.
