A thing I worked on at Epic is now public: We've worked hard to get Unreal Engine cooking on Linux using Wine.

My friends Adam and Aiden from TensorWorks have written up all the technical details of our joint adventure here: https://tensorworks.com.au/blog/migrating-unreal-engine-cook-workloads-to-wine/ - It's a very technical piece, which is indicative of the difficulty of the problem we tackled. Good times!

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.64 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes (mostly bugfixes):

Some tweaks for better integration with https://bsky.brid.gy (the BlueSky bridge by brid.gy).

A corner case bug in the media proxying code has been fixed.

Hashtags can now include underscores.

The server now creates a pidfile inside the data directory.

Mastodon API: fixed a crash in the notification code, fixed autocapitalization in the OAuth login field (contributed by fkooman).

This release has been inspired by the song Take Me To The River by #Kaleida.

Bridgy Fed

Bridgy Fed is a bridge between decentralized social networks like the fediverse, Bluesky, and web sites and blogs.

1/There is nothing more embarrassing than watching hordes of liberals willingly herd themselves into a pen funded by Russian capital. Blue sky’s principal funder Blockchain Capital LLC is run in part by Kirill Dorofeev, who also works for VK, Russia’s state social network.

It's well hidden, but in Bluesky the Relay system, AppView and identity layer PLC are centralised parts.

The posts you see come from the AppView. The AppView gets its data from the Relay. The Relay gets its stuff rom the PDSes. So you always go through the relay. No direct connection from AppView to PDS. Yes, they promise that in future you might be able to run your own relay. But right now and since its inception, Bluesky runs the relay system you connect to. I call that centralised.

IMHO: #BlueSky isn't decentralised or federated. The outage on 2024-11-14 is obvious proof. It may *look* decentralised and they definitely love to outsource traffic/storage costs by claiming that running your own PDS (Personal Data Server) is somehow something federated, but that's all smoke and mirrors. You have to go deep on [1] to find "networking through Relays instead of server-to-server" as their current implementation choice. THEY run the relays. No one else.

Soon, we’re launching a sandbox environment for federation. In advance, we want to share some technical details about our design decisions.

This is your reminder...

There is no algorithm that brings posts to your timeline. The only posts you will see under your Home tab will be either people that you follow, or the boosts from people that you follow.

BOOSTING IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF MASTODON.

If you read something that is interesting, funny, thought provoking, news worthy, or beautiful, then BOOST IT.

Hitting "Favorite" lets the poster know that you liked it BUT IT DOESN'T LET ANYONE ELSE KNOW.

Keep Mastodon alive. BOOST.

Gentle reminder and request.

We are all going to see a lot of inflammatory, viral, racist, sexist libelous shit over the next months.

Your rage is what they want. They want you to dunk on it, repost it with your hot takes, and spread it.

Deny them the free publicity and platform. Please don't link, quote, or share that stuff.
