Work in IT, enjoy music, woodworking, fitness and my family. Might have a slight problem buying too much vinyl to spin in our vinyl room/bar.
Guten Morgen meine Damen und Herren, wir begrüßen Sie zur tagesschau!
Thoughts on the how the jury will vote in the E. Jean Carroll rape case? They need a unanimous vote that it was more likely than not that he did it…
It would be easy to dismiss Trumpworld’s growing connection to fascist and Christian Nationalist groups and ideologies. It would also be a mistake. I walk through some of the most recent instances that should be raising alarm bells in the U.S. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/trump-leans-in-on-crazy-scary?sd=pf
Trump Leans In On Crazy Scary

They say one is a clue, two is a sign and three becomes a pattern. That’s why three different news stories this week have me more than convinced that Trump’s embrace of Christian Nationalism and fascist ideology is near complete. And that is very worrisome.

Despite all its promises of equality and due process under law, America has always had its scapegoats.

I didn’t know it at the time, but when I was a child my entire community became scapegoats. The attack by Imperial Japan upon Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941—a “day that will live in infamy”—made most Americans look upon anyone with a Japanese name or face as the enemy.

May is AANHPI Heritage Month, so I want to take a moment to zero in on the history that led Asian minorities in the U.S. to come together as a group and demand America fulfill its promise of justice and equality: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/scapegoats-aahpi-george-takei-essay

Scapegoats—An Essay on AANHPI Identity by George Takei

For Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, actor and activist George Takei reflects on Asian American history.

The Big Picture

I keep hearing that “#AI will solve the #climate crisis.”

We don’t need new algorithms & generative AI for that.

We already know exactly what we need to do to address* climate change.

Our future will be determined by whether or not we choose to act. I’m hopeful we will.

*Note: “Address” as in achieve better outcomes. Not “solve.” Climate change is here. We cannot avoid it, but we can achieve a more sustainable & equitable Earth.

especially proud of today's npr politics podcast, where we look at what the debt ceiling is, why it matters & what happens if it isn't raised https://www.npr.org/2023/05/09/1175040926/the-us-is-flirting-with-financial-calamity-what-you-need-to-know

Teacher appreciation post: My kids returned to school in the U.S. today & I was reminded of how absolutely wonderful public school teachers can be.

In the face of ongoing attacks on education, book bans, guns, uncertainty, budget cuts, huge class sizes, injustice & more, it’s such an unimaginably challenging time to teach.

And yet, incredible teachers still show up for our kids every day. They know the future is in their hands. And I am so grateful for them. ❤️

As an anthropologist, for me one intriguing aspect of the #coronation was that, of course, #Charles3 studied #Anthropology himself. The first time perhaps that an anthropologist designed and was the central figure in a power ritual all about himself!

If thoughts and prayers did any good, all of mine would have seen Ted Cruz lose his job long ago.
This was my grandmother’s rocking chair. She loved orange cats most of all. I think she would love this. #Cats
