They make Tumblr, WooCommerce, Akismet, LongReads, WordPress—among others.

WordPress alone powers ~44% of the world's websites.

More interesting: despite being such a large, dominant company, few people hate Automattic.

now that it looks like migrations work better than the last time I tried I'm ready to try again. I generally agree with the small instances is better and federate to a larger community. Looking for suggestions while I also looking again at self hosting

Can someone elaborate what happens in #Mastodon with instances that go offline? The specs say that other instances will retry later but it is not really fleshed out.

I'm asking because I've been wondering if it would be possible for people to run their own instances on their computers, going offline when they shut it down or close the apps.

Can #ActivityPub and #Mastodon be used in a more p2p context of desktop apps as servers?
