between 2012 and 2022, an environmental activist was killed every two days - many of whom were Indigenous Land Defenders. why? this system demands that profits are more important than human rights. we must see international condemnation of these murders.
This blogpost makes an astoundingly good case about LLMs I hadn't considered before. The collapse of public forums (like Stack Overflow) for programming answers coincides directly with the rise of programmers asking for answers from chatbots *directly*. Those debugging sessions become part of a training set that now *only private LLM corporations have access to*. This is something that "open models" seemingly can't easily fight. https://michiel.buddingh.eu/enclosure-feedback-loop

Now's a great time to delete your facebook account. You can live life without it.

I'm still on Instagram, but if they ask for this, it's getting deleted.

FFS, how many times does it have to be said? DO NOT use Lithium Ion for static installations. They don't need the energy density and we don't need the fire risk.

LiFePO₄ is cheaper, inherently less risky and available in grid scale quantity.

Sodium is likely to be even better in some respect.

Coastal wetland deposition of cathode metals from the world’s largest lithium-ion battery fire - Scientific Reports

Fires at lithium-ion battery storage facilities pose emerging environmental risks that remain largely undocumented under real-world conditions. Following a major fire at the world’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Moss Landing, California, we conducted rapid, high-resolution soil surveys to quantify metal fallout in adjacent estuarine wetlands. Field-portable X-ray fluorescence (FpXRF), validated by SEM/EDS, laboratory XRF, and ICP-MS, revealed a significant but transient surface enrichment of nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), and cobalt (Co). This enrichment had Ni: Co mass ratios near 2:1 serving as a geochemical fingerprint of NMC-type cathode materials. The metals were confined to a shallow surface layer (< 5 mm). Surface concentrations declined rapidly following precipitation and tidal inundation. The fallout’s thin, transient and patchy distribution would have eluded standard coring methods but was detected through spatially intensive FpXRF sampling, highlighting the importance of rapid detection and the mobilization of metals into wetland ecosystems. These findings underscore the need for adaptive environmental monitoring following battery fires and raise critical considerations for ecosystem protection and infrastructure as energy storage systems expand.

Looooooooong overdue but now that #immich is stable I feel confident enough in it as a long term solution that I am finally doing it. I am deleting everything in Google Photos today. Long overdue.

Also, the deleting process stinks. You have to do it manually from the webUI bit by bit. Anti-user behavior. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise. #selfhosting

Speaking in mitigation today Adelheid Russenberger, 34, a history PhD student from London said:

“I believe that I acted morally and according to my conscience [. …] There is no justice in climate breakdown and without a stable climate no-one can live, let alone thrive. I climbed onto the gantry to try and prevent the government’s disastrous plans to licence more North Sea Oil and gas extraction – oil and gas that would have pushed us closer to lethal irreversible tipping points. I climbed on a gantry because I refused to ignore that basic moral principle of acting to protect life.”

In mitigation, Jane Touil, 59, a visually impaired former crown servant from Rochdale said:

“We are in an unprecedented situation. Yet the law says our protest was not justified. Not necessary. Not reasonable or proportionate. Disruption from flooding, extreme heat, extreme weather and wildfires is not a public nuisance. I am.

“The law will not save us. I have always tried to live and act according to my conscience. I call on everyone in this courtroom and in this country to do the same. Politicians will not make the change we need, but we can”

Four Just Stop Oil supporters jailed for up to 30 months for M25 gantry action while two walk free – Just Stop Oil

Six Just Stop Oil who were denied all legal defences during their trial were today given sentences of up to 30 months at Southwark Crown Court for peacefully climbing gantries on the M25 in 2022, to demand an end to new fossil fuel projects. “If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period. Or if everyone used Apple Music it would have been £12,331 more.”

RESEARCH: What happens when teens steward their own digital spaces?

A study of Discord servers run by and for teens found that moderators not only gained valuable skills, but were actually better at maintaining engaging, healthy spaces for their peers.

It's late 2025 and @signalapp Desktop is still a 650MB Electron app.

Yes, you read that right, *six hundred and fifty megabytes* for a simple messaging app.
@TauriApps has existed for several years, and could (relatively trivially) be used to bundle the same web app at 5-10% of the size.

FFS, there is no excuse for this. If you can't be bothered to port to Tauri at least make it available as a simple web app. How can we expect people to switch from WhatsApp when this is the alternative?
