It's with profound sadness that I throw in the towel on @buttercup, my password manager. I'm going to soon close and archive the project, as I can't devote the time it deserves to keeping it afloat. Buttercup has come to an end - an explanation and a thank you

It’s that time again! I’m looking for help developing @buttercup - a free and #opensource #passwordmanager that’s #crossplatform and #selfhosted. It’s written in #typescript / #javascript, alongside #electron and #reactnative.

It was (and publicly still is) a sparse collection of GitHub repositories, but this has proven cumbersome to manage and I’m in the process of migrating it to a single monorepo. So far it’s proving to have been a fantastic decision and a new build of each application is progressing quickly. I’m aiming to have the entire suite rebuilt and released asap.

But I need more hands to make it move faster. If anyone would be interested in contributing on a mostly greenfield password management application, in the form of one of the following, I’d love to talk with you:
- mobile app (react native)
- browser extension
- cli utility

There’s more on the table than just contributor attribution, too. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’re curious - I’m happy to talk shop and just discuss the project in general, even if you’re not interested in contributing. Boosts extremely welcome!

@zrb Passkeys are indeed on the short list! I think they’re the most requested feature right now.

We’ve explored the VC path previously and didn’t find a suitable configuration with how Buttercup is used, or intended to be used. So I don’t see it coming about. That’s not to say that we don’t have financial goals - we do - but never at the sacrifice of what’s already available for free. No plans to ever further restrict licences or go closed source, only additional peripheral services like a hosted SaaS platform and potential licences for a self hosted solution. Everything aimed at being open source besides the SaaS platform. I’ll also state here that while that’s the goal, it’s a loose one. That and that we’d never sabotage the UX of the free products due to us adding additional paid options. All vault connection types can live side by side.

Of course I can’t expect you to take me on my word over a fedi post but it’s been the same truth I’ve pushed since starting Buttercup round 8 years ago ✌️

Anywho thanks for the mention!

@zrb @[email protected] Hi 👋

Let us know if you want anything cleared up!

We’re going through a larger UI/UX overhaul at the moment so the repos will appear a little stagnant for the next quarter or so.. but we’ve got a better design and development setup planned and will continue supporting current vault formats etc.

Browser extension v3.2 is out with improved form handling and a customisable form button, as well as other minor bug fixes.

Pending release reviews 🐌

I have begun a post explaining this situation in a more detailed writeup. This is updating in realtime, and there is a lot still missing.

We’re looking for help maintaining our Google Drive integration, primarily on desktop. As Google continues to change requirements and guidance on using their APIs, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that we can’t keep up. At least not with maintaining their integration and pushing Buttercup forward at the same time.

If you’re comfortable developing with React/Electron/NodeJS and would be interested in helping out a FOSS product such as ours, please reach out. We’d be very grateful.

We’re aware of a number of small issues regarding our website downloads of the desktop application (you can download it from GitHub’s releases area) as well as our Google drive connection not showing everything it used to.

We’ll be making changes in the coming days to address these problems. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

There’s been a number of you that have been less than satisfied with our V3 browser release, namely because of our requirement for the Buttercup desktop application to be installed and running.

While we hate the idea that we’ve displaced any of our users, we stand behind the decision to utilise the desktop application for streamlined use of our browser addon. Besides the push from Chrome and Edge to require us doing this, it was beneficial to our software for a number of reasons:

* Less to maintain overall
* Less logins required to use our software
* Addon state persistence across updates of the extension

We understand that for some of you, using the browser extension, and only the extension, was your workflow in Buttercup. We can assure you that using the desktop application as the hub for your vaults will increase the ease of access you have to your credentials and secrets. There’s no way however to use the extension without the desktop app, and that most likely won’t be changing in the future.

Please consider reading the discussion on this matter here: https://github.com/buttercup/buttercup-browser-extension/discussions/451

I've mentioned this several times on social media, but I'm aware that many people probably haven't read such updates. I think this is best handled as a discussion anyway. What's changing Due to Chr...
