I keep seeing pieces (from VC firms, consultancies, the White House, etc.) likening the AI rollout to the Industrial Revolution. I’ll admit there are correlations (or at least similarities) between the two. But the similarities I see are not the ones being packaged into neatly wrapped sales pitches about productivity gains and shared prosperity.

docs: attempt to add historical nuance to common ai narrative

As this issue has broken containment, I'll note that there are two lists of signatures.

1. An expression of solidarity with the #WikiWorkersUnited union of current and former staff of the #WikimediaFoundation. Anyone who considers themselves a member or supporter of the #Wikimedia community is welcome to sign this. Over 500 signatures now! https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Workers_United#Solidarity

2. A commitment by English #Wikipedia editors to participate in collective solidarity action (such as an editorial strike), if called upon by the union. The effectiveness of this commitment lies in its threat to withhold hundreds of hours of volunteer labour, but it is open to anyone who has edited Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project, whether you have made ten edits or hundreds of thousands. Over 400 signatures now, representing over seven million edits. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Workers_United_solidarity#Signatures

@kraft and I have been having fun hacking away on FOSSE these past few weeks. tl;dr: we released a dev preview of FOSSE, a plugin that bundles ActivityPub + AT Protocol into one WordPress setup flow, making it easier to syndicate to the Atmosphere and Fediverse. Take it for a spin and let us know what you think!

Despite low union density in this country, unions are one of its most popular institutions. Now is the perfect time to start organizing.

Today makes one year since YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION came out. https://ethanmarcotte.com/books/you-deserve-a-tech-union/

It’s been a wonderful, bumpy, often challenging ride, but I’m still so proud of that little book, and I’m so damned glad it’s out in the world.

(And I’m excited about what might be coming next for it.)

The courts are clear: Google is a monopolist. But will that monopoly be effectively curtailed?

The ruling has been celebrated as a new dawn for the internet, but there are plenty of reasons to believe Google’s power may not be reined in as much as we hope. The fight is far from over.

"This is a story of waste, ignorance and greed. Of being so desperate to own the future but so disconnected from actually building anything. This arms race is a monument to the lack of curiosity rife in the highest ranks of the tech industry. They refuse to do the hard work — to create, to be curious, to be excited about the things you build and the people they serve — and so they spent billions to eliminate the risk they even might have to do any of those things."
