SE Londoner in Lewisham. Tooting (the verb, not the place) about: London, transport, politics, arts, feminism, food, tech, design, environment.

If you want to see Mastodon at its best, strongly recommend these options:

Android - Use apps Tusky or Fedilab

iPhone/iPad - Use apps Metatext or Toot!

💻 Computers - Log in through your server's website

Mastodon was designed for websites and third party apps. These are *still* the best ways to use Mastodon!

(Official app exists because new people were only looking for an official app in app stores, and giving up when they didn't find one. You don't need to use it!)

Do you follow too many people?

Do you want to organise your Mastodon home timeline into several themed mini-timelines that are easier to navigate?

You can do this on Mastodon using the "Lists" feature, and here's a guide all about it:

You can use Lists on third party apps like Tusky for Android or Metatext for iPhone/iPad, or on your server's website.

This is great work from @daveleeFT, who's pulled together a way for journalists to verify who they are on Mastodon. https://www.presscheck.org/

@pleonastic Elon's doing his best to reduce the number of sites we have to look at, don't worry

This is a map of every bus route in London, except there's no road geometry here.

It was created by tracking and tracing the realtime GPS location data for every bus in the city over a period of 15 minutes.

@bookofsand Yeah I also have only ever used third-party Twitter apps, and lists, but I'm always surprised how most people I know put up with the official app, so thought I'd share this

1/4 A key thing I've learned about Mastodon: When you find your friends on here, don't just follow them — add them to a list!

If you follow a lot of accounts, your close friends' posts may not show up in your feed at a time you're logged on. Unlike FB or Twitter, Mastodon has no algorithm to resurface your friends' posts from hours or days ago.

Solution: Create a list called "Friends" and check it when you're on. This will ensure that you see what they posted while you were away. (cont'd)
