A Judicial "hearing" was common because literacy wasn't commonplace - the evidence, the witnesses, deposition was about establishing truth via spoken word and memory. Over time photographic and other evidence became more and more important, but now the barrier to forgery of those things is so low, I wonder if we'll return to human witness / hearing / discussion again. Not saying its better, or we wouldn't have introduced those other ideas - but I think our justice system needs to reevaluate.
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
― Dwight D. Eisenhower

I've smelled the autumn fires lighting up in wood stoves... I've listened to a friend describe manifestations of a life-long love... I've seen my pups chase each other around the mountain property with pure joy and bonded love... and I've watched an artist become entranced by sunlight refracted through a Ziploc bag and projected onto a nearby wall.
Not sure if any of that moves us forward, but I'm also not convinced there's a lot more to the journey.
