General Geek, currently at InfluxData.

My key skillset boils down to problem solving/troubleshooting.

I mostly talk about tech stuff, sometimes slipping into politics or economics.

I'm not great at writing bio's though - the one on my site hasn't changed in years!

My other half just got a #Bitcoin scam call (from an Asian callcentre) addressing her by name.

No real surprise, but they're using #FTX as leverage - we're calling about n BTC in an account in your name, we need to get it to you quickly before the FTX issues affect the value.

When asked what org they worked for, the caller said "the blockchain" 😂

#IRanASignalProxy My signal proxy is still up and running, DM me for details
Decided to look at network stats again. There are 1M more people using #Mastodon today than there were on October 27.

It's been an *awful* week for various (non #birdsite) reasons, so I wanted to absorb myself in writing _something_.

So, I decided I'd try and cover some of what happened on #Twitter this week, especially the predictable outcomes of the #verification changes

A Week on Twitter

I try to summarise the many, many events of this week on Twitter - user revolt, melon husk accounts, parody and multi-billion dollar share hits

I can't remember the last time I was quite so glad to reach the weekend...
Webcams | Wolf Conservation Center

Webcams Our collection of webcams allow an unlimited number of viewers to enter the private lives of our "Education" wolves Silas and Nikai, and seven elusive packs of critically endangered wolves via unobtrusive cameras in and around anticipated den sites. Enjoy and please let us know if you see anything interesting! Curious about wolf behavior?

Remotely switching meters to #pre-payment is utterly predatory and counter productive.

It might stop the customer accruing additional debt, but it also switches them to a mode with much higher unit costs.

Meanwhile... record profits. They're exploiting the vulnerable

Part of the problem is how easy #smartmeters make the switch. There used to be a level of proper oversight - providers needed to arrange a warrant and a visit.

Energy firms remotely swap homes to prepay meters

The regulator said some "vulnerable customers had been left without power for days or even weeks".

Looks like it was probably here, phone doesn't do it justice but the board's bubbled and disformed.

Put it back together ready to return, but have cut the wires so that they don't do a quick power on test and then sell it on to someone else

So this is fun... I ordered a new carbon monoxide detector to, you know, save our lives. Stuck batteries in then wandered off to find some screws.

Came back, and it was warm n smelt of burning.

Batteries felt *hot*

Managed to ping 2 out, and then the third one burst, spraying me with hot battery innards.
