Sixteen Organizations Endorse the UN Open Source Principles | Office of Information and Communications Technology

The United Nations Open Source community is proud to announce that 16 leading organizations have the UN Open Source Principles, following the initial endorsement by the Open Source Initiative (OSI), bringing the total to 17.

Microsoft is introducing ads into a free version of Office, which seemingly only lets users save to OneDrive.

In other news, LibreOffice is also free, doesn't have ads, and lets you save your documents wherever you want. I use it every day for my work. It is available here:

When I was younger I expected my (running, cycling) fitness to slowly decline with age. But what actually happens is a sawtooth where you get fit, have an injury, don't quite recover to previous levels, and repeat. But if you average everyone's sawtooth waves you'll get that smooth curve.

Reminds me of learning about laser speckle where if you take the average over the wrong ensemble you can completely miss an important phenomenon.

How much are AI models helping to develop medical drugs? A research team from #UniLeipzig, the Saxon AI centre ScaDS.AI and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, US, publishes a study on the combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and biophysical modelling. This is an important step in the development of new drugs such as antibodies and vaccines:

How much are AI models helping to develop medical drugs?

An interdisciplinary research team from Leipzig University and the Saxon AI centre ScaDS.AI has developed a novel approach that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) methods with biophysical modelling. This innovative strategy can be applied to the development of new therapeutics, such as antibodies and vaccines, including those for pandemic preparedness. The research project, conducted in collaboration with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, US, is the result of extensive preliminary work in computer-aided drug development. It aims to harness the strengths of both AI and biophysics to tackle challenges in protein design more effectively. The study has now been published in the journal Science Advances.

Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines?

Jevin West and I have spent the last eight months developing the course on large language models (LLMs) that we think every college freshman needs to take.

https://thebullshitmachines.com

This is not a computer science course.

It’s a humanities course about how to learn and work and thrive in an AI world.

Neither instructor nor students need a technical background. Our instructor guide provides a choice of activities for each lesson that will easily fill an hour-long class.

The entire course is available freely online. Our 18 online lessons each take 5-10 minutes; each illuminates one core principle. They are suitable for self-study, but have been tailored for teaching in a flipped classroom.

The course is a sequel of sorts to our course (and book) Calling Bullshit. We hope that like its predecessor, it will be widely adopted worldwide.

Large language models are both powerful tools, and mindless—even dangerous—bullshit machines. We want students to explore how to resolve this dialectic.

Mad at Meta? Don't Let Them Collect and Monetize Your Personal Data

If you’re fed up with Meta right now, you’re not alone. Meta tracks you across millions of websites and apps and its business model relies on your data. If you want to limit Meta’s ability to collect and profit from your personal data, here’s what you need to know.
