If the instance is getting slow - - it is a gentle reminder to become a Patron (if you can)!

I need to find a smaller instance, meanwhile I am happy to support patreon.com/mastodon

Support your instance #Fediverse #TwitterMigration

@sethaxen did you change your instance? I’m also planing to change instance to ease with the load on .social servers. Your new profile shows 0 followers. Isn’t the migration process supposed to carry over your followers to the new instance ?
You know what would be a cool feature to have in #mastodon (probably this is there in some instances) ? Markdown rending with LaTeX equations and code highlighting!

I just became a patron of #Mastodon social. Every dollar counts. They need our support for building & maintaining these social goods!

I encourage everyone who’s in a position to chip in to support them in ways you can. #OpenSource #foss

I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's

The advantage of not having an algorithm is that you are not infinitely scrolling through your feed!

Unlike Twitter, when you 'like' (Favourite) something here, it doesn't share that interaction with your followers.

If you've found a post or a piece of art that you've enjoyed - boost that toot!

Learn different methods, different schools of thoughts within your field, get your hands dirty with atleast a couple of competing frameworks, learn how to theorize, learn the art of teaching, written communication & visual communication.

But you can’t complain if people optimize for publications, because that’s how the reward system is designed in #academia.

Just happened to see another post taking about productivity during PhD (in Twitter). The problem is that people measure productivity by the number of publications during the training and I don’t believe it’s a good measure. The goal of a PhD shouldn’t be to produce a lot of papers but to learn all the necessary skills to become an independent researcher.

6/6 So, the tech world builds fantastic tools like Twitter, tools that shape modern society. But it is too easily corruptible and sells out to the mighty regardless of the potential dangers.

I have a dream of technology to help building a better society. We will need not only lines of code, but also to hold ourselves to higher standards.
