Beautiful example of elevating the hollow trend story. It doesn't just quote no people doing the thing it says people are doing (it instead quotes an influencer and someone trying to sell phones). It also quotes an unidentified person, whose full name on first mention must have been cut, saying that dumb phone sales are flat but "could" increase in the next five years. OK. But on top of that, they add a *17 minute* video package! Kudos! Amazing garbage. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/29/dumb-phones-are-on-the-rise-in-the-us-as-gen-z-limits-screen-time.html
🚨Pub alert🚨 this @PolComm forum advances an argument originally focused on private messaging and the study of disinfo. Now, it may well extend to SM research writ large given recent curbs on data access. In short, as citizens increasingly use private messaging apps (and platforms continuously restrict data access), social scientists need to rethink the big data mentality that shaped the field in the recent past. 50 free copies here (or via DM): https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/GKJDEFK8EDGGAGYGDHTV/full?target=10.1080/10584609.2023.2193563

Really something here in the way party coalitions can only hold members to task so long as they need the coalition for their own goals. Look at the way Cheney used to talk about the second amendment. https://twitter.com/search?q=from%3Aliz_cheney%202nd%20amendment&src=typed_query&f=top

A real niche question here, but does anyone know of a study that looks at whether days per week #survey measures tend to be bimodal?

Rachel E. Moran & Stephen Prochaska’s “Misinformation or activism?" illustrates how the SaveTheChildren hashtag became a focal point for a QAnon-linked, conspiracy theory-driven movement on Instagram. The authors use the concept of “networked moral panic” to understand how “seemingly disparate groups of people” (13) mobilized around an issue invoking highly affective responses.

People often support and justify social systems, even when those systems disadvantage them. But why?

In this new review article, we address this question using a social identity model of system attitudes (SIMSA).

A social identity model of system attitudes (SIMSA): Multiple explanations of system justification by the disadvantaged that do not depend on a separate system justification motive

System justification theory (SJT) assumes that social identity theory (SIT) cannot fully account for system justification by members of low-status (disadvantaged) groups. Contrary to this claim, we...

Secondary analysis of ANES data (and frankly lots of data from other sources) is really rough if you have even a little bit of OCD. Why is every single set of response options coded in the wrong direction?!

The News Philadelphians Use: Analyzing the Local Media Landscape - Center for Media Engagement

Understanding the needs of local news audiences is essential for a healthy media ecosystem. And before newsrooms can take steps toward meeting these needs, it’s crucial that they understand how people interact with local news, what issues they find important, and what communities feel underrepresented.
